Meet Our Creatives

We’re gearing up for the exciting opening of our fabulous new shop on Grant Street, Cleethorpes and we thought what better way to show you all of the absolute gems you can discover within Arttopia than to give you a sneak peek into the lives of our many talented business owners who provide them! We’ve all answered a few questions about our work so grab a cuppa, sit back and enjoy having a nosy at some of the things that makes us tick.

There’s quite a few of us in the Arttopia family, so keep an eye out for more ‘Meet our Creatives’ posts as we add each of our artist and maker's stories.

First up are Michelle (Made by Moonlight), Tracie (Art Dollz), Beth (Marybeth Crystals) and Katherine (Katherine Mutch Ceramics).

1. Tell us a bit about why you started your business.

Michelle (Made by Moonlight):

Hmm, Made by Moonlight was born during a really difficult time in my life. I was losing my Dad to cancer and I needed to do something with my hands. At the time, loom bands were all the rage and my son had a loom band hook, which turned out to be a crochet hook. I hunted down a ball of yarn in the house from a previous abandoned knitting attempt and opened YouTube. You could say I fell down the rabbit hole after that and haven’t looked back since.

Tracie (Art Dollz):

I started out making things years ago and finally feel I have found the things I love making the most, my Art Dollz.

Beth (Marybeth Crystals):

I started Marybeth Crystals following the birth of our premature daughter. I needed some healing and naturally began to use crystals. My husband bought me a crystal healing diploma course which I completed. I began drawing as I found this therapeutic, and my crystal grids were born.

Katherine (Katherine Mutch Ceramics):

I just seemed to fall into it. Both my parents were very creative and my mum was artistic so I’ve probably been making since before I could write. Mum had a kiln when I was 20-something so I made a lattice bread basket which I still use. I stated taking it seriously about ten years ago.

2. What is your favourite item that you sell?

Michelle (Made By Moonlight):

I adore making baby blankets, knowing that someone is going to wrap up their most precious baby in something that little ol’ me has made is a wonderful feeling. And I love anything that is rainbow themed. They’re such a wonderful, happy, colourful addition to any environment.

Tracie (Art Dollz):

My Dollz, I love the way they turn out and have so many more ideas I want to share!

Beth (Marybeth Crystals):

My custom crystal grids as I get great satisfaction from working with the customer to create their perfect healing grid.

Katherine (Katherine Mutch Ceramics): A hard one – I love the Green Man because of my interest in history and ancient buildings but I also love the abstract disc mobiles which seem to fit into the natural environment.

3. What piece of advice would you give to anyone who wants to start their own creative business?

Michelle (Made by Moonlight):

Follow your own path and have lots of fun finding what you enjoy.

Tracie (Art Dollz):

The advice I would give is listen to criticism and compliments and use them positively.

Beth (Marybeth Crystals):

Don’t force it, just let it flow.

Katherine (Katherine Mutch Ceramics):

Share and support. Discuss and share your ideas and take constructive feedback. Support others – the good ones will always give it back.

4. Who would be your dream person/business to collaborate with?

Michelle (Made by Moonlight):

Oh that’s a tough question, I really don’t know. I would love to have my Moon Bunnies illustrated at some point but I guess I wouldn’t know where to start with that.

Tracie (Art Dollz):

I would love to work with Tim Burton.

Beth (Marybeth Crystals):

I’m not sure yet.

Katherine (Katherine Mutch Ceramics):

A gardener – I’m a green person, I love the outdoors, the natural environment and interesting gardens. I’d really like to take inspiration from that.

5. Lastly, what fairs/events/workshops are you excited about taking part in this year?

Michelle (Made by Moonlight):

This year you’ll find me at Café INDIEpendent craft fairs in Scunthorpe, organised by Miss Pigeon Vintage on 30th June and 29th September. Hopefully I’ll be at more local events towards the end of the year around Grimsby and Cleethorpes.

Tracie (Art Dollz):

There’s a 2 day fair at the Wellow in July that I put myself down for a good while ago so I’m looking forward to that. Although nothing will top getting into the new shop.

Beth (Marybeth Crystals):

Healthy Living Fair at Waters Edge, Barton on 26th May. I will also be hosting crystal workshops in the near future and I can hold private crystal grid workshops for a minimum group of 4 people.

Katherine (Katherine Mutch Ceramics):

Launching my own workshops is the most exciting for me but I’m really looking forward to the craft fair events at Café INDIEpendent this year. I love the place.
